A record-company president starts a speech. Dave Mustaine answers, “And your point?” I’m keeping that one within reach.
In this 2006 Rocks Vault interview, the Megadeth musician recalls a meeting about the flag he had carried for a metal generation and the riffs he had written. Dave says he could have sat there defending himself. Instead, he went straight to the question.
“Just write for yourself.”
The answer he remembers: go get your flag, reclaim it, and write for yourself. Dave says that’s what he did, and he thinks he made a great record.
He describes music that was not geared toward radio or television. To explain what it does sound like, he offers a more bananas listening arrangement: put an ear against his forehead. That’s what you’d hear inside.
The response at the end: “Oh, I hear it. I hear it.”
I’ll take the clip. The forehead edition sounds difficult to plug in.
